Prevention action for cyclists’ safety

The police offered safety equipments to raise the awareness of two-wheelers to the decline in visibility, linked to the transition to winter time. Pedestrians are also invited to be visible and motorists to be vigilant.

With the transition to winter time, the night begins to fall when many motorists return from work. Lower visibility associated with the fatigue of the workday, lead to an over-risk for people traveling on two wheels. This is the reason why the Maine-et-Loire prefecture, in connection with the police forces, organized awareness-raising actions in the department, including that of Thursday evening in Cholet. It consisted of stopping cyclists traveling on boulevard and offering them a kit * including a yellow reflective vest, a reflective armband and an information note on the dangers involved.

To be visible too, one and even two lights on his bike or on his arm, flashing or not, are essential. As for the helmet, it is highly recommended even if it is not mandatory for adults. “The danger is everywhere. They must understand that they are vulnerable, that they think to be visible day and night and that they must respect the rules of the road, “said Christian, deputy prefect of the borough of Cholet. He recalls: “In 2017, we had two mortals in two-wheelers in the department, not to mention the many wounded sometimes serious.”

Road safety therefore attracts the attention of all road users, including pedestrians. “150 meters is the distance at which a pedestrian is visible when equipped with reflective tape, compared to 30 meters without equipment? However, at 50 km / h, the driver needs 26 meters to stop his vehicle. And “with the change of time, the number of accidents increases by almost 50% between 5 pm and 7 pm”.
