Mandatory with a reflective vest on moped and motorcycle

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration states in a press release that from 1 May this year motorcyclists and moped drivers must wear a reflective vest on the vehicle. The vest should be used if you have to stop along the road.

“If you get an emergency stop, you can quickly stand in places where other road users do not expect there to be anyone. You may not be visible to other road users. If you wear a reflective vest, you increase the chance of being seen on time,” says Jon Molnes in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

ATVs registered as a moped or motorcycle also fall under the injunction.

The use of a reflective vest with reflective material will give a motorist driving at low speed for 50 km/h, eight seconds longer to see a pedestrian. Those seconds can be the difference between life and death.

Without a reflective vest, the driver has two seconds to detect the pedestrian. With a reflective vest, this increases to ten seconds.

The Roads Agency states that the vest must be CE approved, and they recommend a vest with reflective tape approved according to EN 471 class two or class EN 1150.

If you do not carry the vest on your motorcycle or car, you will not be charged if this is requested in check. On the other hand, the police can fine if road users do not use the vest in situations where it is appropriate.
