The yellow vest becomes mandatory on two wheels

Proposed by the Minister of the Interior at the end of January, the obligation to wear the yellow vest was published in the Official Journal on May 10 for implementation on January 1, 2016. Therefore, every biker or scooter operator will have to wear a retro-reflective device in an emergency…

A little more than three years ago, the Government announced the obligation to equip itself with a “yellow vest” for all motorcyclists and scooters when they circulate. Faced with the outcry of the FFMC, the measures softened by discreetly swapping the vest against a simple retro-reflective armband, before finally go to the trap. This is in any case what we thought until the beginning of the year…

As part of its plan to combat road mortality presented on January 26, 2015, the Minister of the Interior Bernard has proposed the return of the yellow vest “in case of emergency stop, as is already the case for motorists.” A recommendation that was formalized last Sunday, May 10, 2015, through a decree that complements the Highway Code.

The law, which will come into force on January 1, 2016, provides for the requirement for motorcyclists to possess “on them or in a storage of their vehicle (net, trunk …)” a high visibility vest they must “wear when they get off their vehicle following an emergency stop, to improve their visibility”. It puts them on par with motorists, for whom it was already the case since 2008.

This obligation also concerns drivers of 3-wheeled scooters and quads, who will also have to equip themselves with a retro-reflective vest that complies with the regulations in force (CE marking). Offenders will be liable to a fine of 11 € in case of absence of the vest, and up to 135 € if they are surprised on the side of the road without the device. You have 7 months to prepare!
