Yellow vests required to hit the road

An Italian municipality is preparing to force working on its territory to don neon safety clothing. “Like the workers”.

We take road safety very seriously. It is for this reason (at least officially) that this small town of Lombardy, 25 km from Milan, is preparing to impose a dress code to prostitutes. The “fireflies” hitting on the edge of the Milan-Cremona highway will have to wear a yellow safety vest.

According to the decision of the municipal council, the offenders risk a fine of 500 Euros and a report to the prefecture. “Sex workers should be treated like construction workers and forced to wear clothes that make them visible,” says vice-syndic Lucian in Carrier Sera. The municipality also banishes miniskirts and necklines too plunging.

The measure is expected to come into effect in September. Spine is not the first municipality to introduce such a regulation. In 2010, the Spanish city of Ells Alamos had also ordered his night-owls to don the fluorescent reflective vest.

The opening of the World Expo in Milan this spring has attracted some 15,000 prostitutes in the city and its surroundings, according to estimates.
