Remember: Reflections can save lives

Any pedestrian who is traveling at dusk on the way outside the built-up area must have a reflective vest placed in a way visible to the driver. Many pedestrians apply to new regulations; unfortunately there are people who continue to expose their lives. Remember, walking in a dark dress is seen by the driver at a distance of about 40 meters. On the other hand, a pedestrian, wearing reflective elements, becomes visible even at a distance of 150 meters

The largest number of pedestrian accidents occurs in the autumn months. Unlit roads, lack of designated places for safe pedestrians on the way (especially outside built-up areas), and inadequate use of roads by pedestrians themselves cause many road events. It happens that pedestrians enforce priority on passing cars, forgetting that cars cannot stay in place. Often, pedestrians do not realize that they are less visible on the road. It is worth recalling that after dark, walking in a dark suit is seen by the driver at a distance of about 40 meters. On the other hand, a pedestrian, wearing reflective elements, is visible from a distance of 150 meters. These additional meters allow the driver to brake and safely bypass the pedestrian.

As of August 31, 2014, any pedestrian who is traveling at dusk on the way outside the built-up area must have a reflector placed in a manner visible to the driver.

The rule provides for an exception: pedestrians may move in the dusk outside the built-up area without retro reflectors if they are on a pedestrian or pavement only road. The new rule does not apply to the area of residence – there the pedestrian uses the entire width of the road and takes precedence over the vehicle.

Reflective items can be attached to clothing, armbands, waistcoats and lanyards. It is important to place them: Reflective materials are recommended to be placed at the height of your knees, hands, in the chest and back area – then we will be sure that they are clearly visible to other road users.
