The winter timetable has just started and it falls very early in the evening, which does not always make us feel good, a time of adaptation is necessary. But if there is something that we cannot adapt to is an accident because of the low light without any reflective element. As pedestrians and as cyclists, children are the most vulnerable on the roads, especially during the winter months, with fewer hours of light.
A frequent cause of abuse is the lack of visibility, which caused 25 victims under the age of 14 and more than 200 seriously injured last year. To prevent these accidents, the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) has just launched the “Let It See” campaign in Spain, promoted by the International Automobile Federation.
This is a campaign promoted by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) which has also started in 14 other countries with the slogan to alert children to the need to become visible during this winter in crossings of streets and roads through the correct use of reflective vest.
And is that the figures of accidents due to the lack of visibility are not negligible: in Europe there are 800 children who die annually when they suffer an attack and 100,000 injured. The campaign has Formula 1 drivers like Fernando Alonso, Sebastian, Felipe Massa or Nick Romberg as ambassadors, which we can see in social networks supporting it.
The goal is to teach children the importance of wearing these vests when they are traveling, such as pedestrians or cyclists, in areas with low illumination to be seen by drivers. It is explained in a simple way, through videos, comics … how to stay safe on the road, especially at night and when weather and visibility are worse.
It is easy to understand how, with little visibility, a driver will not see a pedestrian or cyclist until he is ten meters away, insufficient to react in time and avoid an accident. With the use of a reflective vest, the visibility distance expands considerably and with it the reaction time.
Among the ten WHO strategies for preserving the safety of children on the road is precisely this, to improve the sight and visibility of children. They advise wearing light clothing and use retro reflective belts on clothing or items such as backpacks, among other recommendations.
For example, self-reflective vests would also be important on pedestrian buses on the way to school, or on the guards guarding crossings and footsteps around schools … And use front lights as well as parts on bicycles Reflective front, rear and wheel … In short, everything possible to make children more visible and less vulnerable to accidents.
So we already know, when it comes to hiking, walking or cycling, not only have to take into account the conditions of the terrain or the weather, also the time that we are going to do and, being foreseeable, put the reflective safety vest and flashlights in the backpack.
