DH tested a reflective spray: Here the verdict

Recently available on the net or in specialized shops, the spray bombs reflective however not yet invaded our cities.

The Belgian Institute for Road Safety (IBSR) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of these products. The DH has also conducted tests.

To be effective, paints retro-reflective should be visible when illuminated by invisible and other conditions. “They can then become an alternative to reflective vests, deemed impractical or cumbersome by some. Conversely, if they not give the expected results, the weak users may have a false sense of security “, explained IBSR early in his study.

As part of this investigation, the IBSR tested paint samples on tissue commonly worn outdoors and building materials; and this in different weather conditions. In DH, we tested the bomb textile and verified its effectiveness on cotton in the dark.

“Given the results obtained, IBSR can not recommend the use of this type of painting sheeting as an alternative to high visibility clothing. Although invisible paint, when applied correctly, can improve the ability to be seen, the gain is much less than that of traditional fluorescent jackets “, concludes the specialist institute.

First, the reflective effect is only noticeable at a distance of several meters. The spray does not reveal is very visible to three meters. Second, the product is certainly washable but is highly toxic and polluting, which is stated on the package. Third, to see the effect of the product, the packaging says to take a picture with flash. But in our tests, we found that the spray reflects much more light flashes as car headlights.

“If properly licensed apparel is not available, painting retro-reflective material invisible can be a good way to increase its visibility but the user must be aware of its limited effect”, advises IBSR. He welcomes the initiative and sees potential in this type of products.
