Already on the next Wednesday, December 6, 2017 throughout the country, the “Reflective Day” will be held again. Police officers will also join the nationwide campaign, who, while promoting safety and roads, will distribute reflective bands and vests as well as reflective lights for the bike to the city’s residents.
On December 6, the Reflective Day will take place once again in Poland. It was held for the first time on January 25, 2017. The aim of the project is to encourage as many unprotected road users as possible to use reflective elements, not only after dark outside the built-up area. The idea of the project originates from Norway, where the ‘Reflective Day’ is organized every year.
In autumn and winter, reflections take on special significance. Long, dark afternoons, dark mornings, mists, rain or snow are not conducive to road users. According to the law, every pedestrian moving along the road after dark outside the built-up area is obliged to use reflective elements in a visible way for other road users, unless it moves on a road intended only for pedestrians or on the sidewalk. Having a reflective element increases the visibility of a pedestrian on the road to about 150 meters. In this case, the driver has more time for a response appropriate to the conditions, and the seconds gained in this way can save health or even life. The situations in which the reflective elements should be worn should not be limited only to the undeveloped area. Even in built-up areas, in the light of a street lamp, also in the case of passing through a lighted pedestrian crossing is more visible having a reflection than if it had not.
Reflective elements may be attachments or put on clothes, bands and vests. It is important to place them, the reflections should be at the level of the knees, hands, around the center of the chest and back – and then we will be sure that we are clearly visible to other road users. Police officers around the country are involved in activities promoting road safety. The campaign will also include police officers who on Wednesday will distribute reflective bands and safety vest as well as reflective lights for the bike to the residents of the city.
