The Directorate General of Traffic starts next Monday a campaign at the provincial level against the road crashes in which pursues the goal of “zero victims.” So far this year, with the exception of the two deceased in the capital city of As Burges, there have been no fatal accidents of pedestrians in the interurban roads in which the surveillance and security competition corresponds to the State.
The provincial head of Traffic, David Lorene, yesterday was optimistic about the possibility of closing the year without deaths. Also cautious as the remaining two months, November and December, are “the most delicate” to reduce the hours of light and worsen weather conditions due to rain and fog, which makes it necessary to “take extreme precautions and be seen on the roads?” Hence, the traffic sector in Orense has decided to intensify this campaign at the province level through the distribution throughout the winter of 1,000 high visibility vests among rural residents, and informative talks in collaboration with municipalities, senior centers, and Cruz Red, in which the DGT will distribute educational and informative material with road safety recommendations for cyclists and pedestrians.
David Lorene explained that the trend is “downward” and that the average number of road and interurban road accidents has fallen below the five or six abuses that occurred years ago. In 2015, the objective of “zero victims” was achieved for the first time until now, but last year the deceased returned to the statistics of the abuses, with a total of 4 dead, two of them in urban roads in the that the competition corresponds to the local police, and two others on roads monitored by the Civil Traffic Guard.
In this sense, David Lorene explains that the highest incidence of this type of road accident occurs in urban areas, because circulation is more intense. Moreover, pointed out that the DGT cannot intervene in these cases because competition, it is from the municipal services. However, he indicated that the campaign against the abuses would also be present in the capital and the villages through talks at the centers for the elderly and the Red Cross. “Although the statistics show that most of the abuses continue occurring on urban roads and that descend significantly in the rest, the DGT considers necessary to continue deepening in the prevention and reduction of this type of incident,” said Lorene in yellow vest.
The data provided yesterday by the provincial traffic headquarters illustrate the higher incidence of the abuses on urban roads. So far this year, aside from the two deaths recorded in the city of Orense, 27 seriously injured was recorded of which only two occurred on interurban roads and provincial roads, and 59 minor injuries, 3 they in spaces competition of the State. This means that 94.4% of incidents with injuries in the province of Orense this year took place on urban roads.
The campaign will developed through two complementary actions. The first with the celebration of talks in socio-community centers and associations, where the rules of circulation will explain, aimed especially at the elderly, both pedestrians and drivers, who will give a reflective vest. The second action consists of the direct distribution of this material on the road by traffic agents to pedestrians who do not use it. It is mandatory and not only at night in low light, heavy rain or fog.
