“Be Brilliant” educates poorly lit cyclists to wear reflective vest

A long as the days get shorter, the Research and Action Group for daily cyclists (GRACQ) recalls the importance of having good lighting with reflective clothing from the sunset.

The association launched its eighth awareness campaign under the slogan “Be Brilliant” from 9 to 30 November. Volunteers distribute lighting kits to badly lit cyclists in Brussels and Wallonia. Those who are properly equipped will be rewarded … they will receive chocolates.

“This year we have placed greater emphasis on prevention, we will hand out safety vest and other reflective material, says Aurelia Williams, secretary general of GRACQ. These field actions take place after a fortnight’s awareness: information messages were broadcast and widely reported by our partners. ”

A useful campaign

“The numbers speak for themselves: since the first edition of our campaign in 2008 shows that the proportion of cyclists with a lighting order is on the increase … This demonstrates the relevance of this annual campaign awareness!”

According to figures from the Observatory bike in the Brussels-Capital Region, in 2014, 70% in fact there are cycling properly equipped against 58% in 2008.

The proportion of circulating cyclists without lights fell 22% to 13%.

Also according to the statistics, wearing reflective vest, although not mandatory, is also more common. 57% of bikers use it against 43% previously.

The campaign “Be Brilliant” is therefore available to 30% of cyclists who still circulate or without lighting or with inadequate lighting, inconsistent with the rules of the road. To encourage cyclists GRACQ also organizing a photo contest.

For your safety, be sure to be seen.
